She was married 3 times- Andrew Williams, John W. Strange, and James Lane. She also lived in Knox Co as an adult. She died in Knox Co and was buried there. She is a cousin of Leah Hart Thornhill. Family legend says that Leah Slayton was 1/4th Cherokee. She may have had a sister whose first name was Cindy who also married a Williams and 2 half sisters whose last name may have been Schubert." Almarinda Susan Johnson "January 22, 1830" North Carolina John W. Cox "August 29, 1847" "Georgia, Arkansas, Ohio" "Almarinda Susan (Johnson)Cox, had 10 children. Her husband John W. Cox, was killed early in the Civil War out of Little Rock, Arkansas. After John Cox was killed she and her children returned to Georgia. Sometime before 1870, Almarinda and her children were sent to Ohio as refugees. Her last daughter, Flora Cox, was born 1868, Mill Creek, Hamilton Co. Ohio. The next time I find Almarinda she is listed in the Cox Bible, Nemeha, Kansas, as having died in 1880. I have no other information on Almarinda, my GGGrandmother. She, Elbert, her parents and siblings, James, William, and Drury left the state of Virginia around 1879-1882 for Nebraska to settle on land being given away to homesteaders. Left behind in Virginia was the oldest son, John Robert Burge who took money the family had sent for him to come to Nebraska and got married to an Ellen Kitts and remained in the state of Virginia until his death in 1918. Presumably Carter was her first husband. Had oldest son, Melvin Carter, born May 19, 1879, with her. James and she had children: Ellie, born October 31, 1883; Susan Cora, born January 29, 1885; Dorie, born May 28, 1887; Mollie, born March 24, 1889; George, born October 9, 1891; James Elbert(my grandfather), born May 4, 1893; Henry, born March 13, 1895; and Charley David, born January 28, 1897.
